10 questions with the Golden Lily online accessories store
One of the hottest trends that never seems to go out of style (especially in the South) is a fabulous piece. Whether it’s sparkling rhinestone earrings, a dazzling headband or a chic summer hat, we all need it here, no matter the season or holiday. We chatted with Abby Dumatrait, owner of online accessories store Golden Lily, to find out what makes her store and products shine. Read on to learn more about the history of Dumatrait and how it shaped Golden Lily into what it is today.
1. What is your professional background? How did you get into the retail business?
When I was 16, I started working in a shop in Lafayette. I was lucky enough to work for two women who took me to market with them and showed me how to run a business. I have a degree in Fashion Merchandising and a minor in Commerce from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. After college, I worked in management for Dillard’s, Macy’s and Francesca’s, managing multiple departments and locations.
2. What inspired you to open your store?
I remember always wanting to start my own business after college, but fear and excuses always got in the way. Fast forward after many years in retail, I was exhausted. I decided to focus on B2B sales, payroll sales and commercial real estate technology. I learned so much from my outside sales jobs that I had no idea at the time that it would help me run my own business. I finally decided to stop talking about starting a business and do it. I took the leap, I worked very hard and here I am now!
3. When did Golden Lily open and how has it grown or changed since?
I opened Golden Lily in September 2016. So much has changed and evolved since we opened. We started with small pop-up events in my area, and now ship nationwide. In 2019, I started designing and manufacturing our own line of jewelry and accessories. Last June, we were at the Dallas Apparel Market for the first time as a brand, and we were thrilled to share Golden Lily with boutiques across the country.
4. What are some of your favorite Golden Lily items right now?
So many things! I like a good transition to the next season. We’re gearing up for game day with our football earrings and rhinestone star drop earrings. Headbands are really important to us right now, and we have some in game day colors too. I can’t wait to get ready for fall, Halloween and the holidays.
5. What sets Golden Lily apart?
I knew that by opening an online store, I would rarely meet my customers in person. I knew I would have to work very hard to gain their trust and following. I think we do a very good job through many channels to connect with our customers who I may never meet. When I travel to other markets and meet customers in person, it’s very special. I love meeting my clients in person and can’t wait to see their be enthusiastic about our products. I see every transaction that goes through; I read their orders and see where they came from and what they bought. I’ll never meet every customer, but I love sending them a thank you note and a gold packet filled with lots of NOLA sparkle.
6. What does a typical day look like for you and your team?
Every day is different, but I always make a to-do list in the morning. I just hired an employee, so adjusting to task delegation was the hardest part. I usually do everything myself! I start my day at 6 a.m. communicating with my manufacturers. Then I take a break for coffee and exercise. I then catch up on my emails, update social media, and head to the office to tackle my list. We also host weekly photoshoots for our website and social media.
7. What are some of your best-selling products?
My clients love themed and trendy earrings. Abby earrings are one of my best sellers; they are lightweight and such a great earring to wear all year round. They are also my all time favorite piece that I have. My best selling themed earrings since I’ve been in business are my rhinestone spider earrings. We’re bringing them back again this year and they’re a must have for Halloween!
8. What do you think is one thing customers should know about your store that they might not be aware of?
I like to give back to my community. Without them, I wouldn’t be where I am today. When I started my business, one of my long-term goals was to give back in a bigger way as I grew in my business. Last spring, I partnered with the Junior League of Greater Covington for their Project Prom event. We were able to donate brand new accessories to over 100 prom girls last spring. We have other plans in the works to give back this fall.

10. Can you give a hint as to what buyers will see in the future?
Yes, there will be lots of fun, new themed earrings, but I’m excited for the headline pieces coming this fall and the holiday season. We are almost done designing our Mardi Gras 2023 collection; it’s our favorite party!
