Congratulations to the black bosses! It’s no secret that black women have and always will be in a category of their own. And Jance Chartae, founder of Brazen Shopa women’s loungewear brand, is one of the success stories inspiring other women to unleash their full potential.
The name Jance Chartae may not mean anything to you, but the contractor has done a lot of work over the years. Jance has a retail background in business and management for major fashion brands including Saks Fifth Avenue, The Limited, DKNY, etc. Additionally, Jance got into entrepreneurship while working for a small business. After sharing her journey with her subscribers on her YouTube channel and coping with the loss of her job, Brazen Boutique was born.
Jance on the shift from management to e-commerce
Leaving your full-time job comes with its own set of worries. However, Jance shared that while the road can be tough, learning how to successfully shift her mindset has helped her transition from management to e-commerce.
“The biggest issue I faced was the mindset shift from in-person sales and customer service to digital sales and customer service,” Jance tells us. “Also, e-commerce can be extremely difficult when it comes to making ‘consistent’ sales. I had to learn what marketing was, create an email list and a content marketing strategy. I had to be willing to pay for social media advertising if I wanted real growth.
Jance on Lessons Learned About Entrepreneurship
The idea of starting your own business can naturally give you pause – especially since 20% of businesses fail within the first year, for example. Fundera. However, the Brazen Shop explains that passion, determination, and the ability to put your customer base first go a long way to building a successful business.
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the harder you try to get noticed, the less money you’ll make,” says Jance. “The more you care about others, the more money you will make. But the best companies don’t succeed because they focus on serving everyone. They succeed because they exist to serve one group or type of people specific, and that’s what makes them profitable.
Even though entrepreneurship comes with heavy responsibilities, the reward outweighs the risk. Not only has Jance earned $200,000 in online sales with Brazen Boutique over the past two years, but she’s also given birth The Shop Academy. This elite academy coaches budding entrepreneurs through online courses and resources to help them conquer the e-commerce space and build successful businesses. Jance’s mission is to help women increase their income, quit their jobs and work on their own terms.
“Whether [entrepreneurs] create amazing content, work with influencers, host events, run ads, earn millions of dollars… anything is possible for you,” Jance added. “You just have to work for it. If you consistently keep your target audience at the forefront of your decision-making, your e-commerce brand can be successful.
