Wayne County Commissioner helps local girls find their perfect prom dress for free
DETROIT – With the high school prom fast approaching, many parents are worried about the costs of sending their child to the big event.
Fortunately, one woman has helped ease the burden of these expenses for local families over the past 15 years.
A number of teenagers attended the Belle of the Ball event at the Boys and Girls Club in Detroit, where prom dresses are free – and most are brand new – for any young woman heading to the ball soon.
Whether pink, purple, blue, sparkly, strappy, bedazzled, the event has it all. And once dress fitting begins, the options are endless for young girls looking forward to that once-in-a-lifetime high school experience.
All of the dresses for the event are donated by various stores and people. La Belle du ball has been supplying dresses to local girls since 2007 and was started by Alisha Bell, who stores all these dresses in her father’s attic all year round.
“(If) we could give them the dress and the shoes and the jewelry, then they can worry about the hair and the makeup and the limos,” said Bell, chairman of the Wayne County Commission. “We want to at least help them with the clothing part.”
Father-of-five Reggie Williams brought his daughter to the event after spending too much on his first daughter. He was overwhelmed to see his second daughter wearing a gorgeous pink dress that won’t cost him anything.
“There are so many things you have to spend money on. And that’s one thing I don’t have to worry about because Miss Belle cared enough to take these things for us,” Williams said. “I am so happy.”
Girls can also choose shoes and accessories, which will allow their families to spend their hard-earned money on other things.
“Especially in these difficult times, when inflation hits, gas prices are astronomical, food prices are astronomical – we will bring relief to parents and families,” Bell said.
If you have a daughter attending prom next year, be sure to keep Prom Beauty in mind, so you can help her find the prom dress she’s always wanted.
